Regions Overdraft Grace

Regions Overdraft Grace gives you extra time to make a deposit or transfer funds to your account to help you avoid overdraft fees. You don't have to enroll to take advantage of Regions Overdraft Grace, but for the best experience, enroll in online banking and sign up for alerts[1].

How to avoid overdraft fees with Overdraft Grace

Enroll in Online Banking[2]

You don’t have to enroll in Regions Overdraft Grace, but for the best Overdraft Grace experience, you should enroll in online banking to get the fastest overdraft communication.

Set up alerts to monitor your accounts

Set up an Overdraft alert as well as the Negative Balance alert[1] for your account in online banking to get timely notices about pending overdrafts and your options to avoid overdraft fees.

Deposit or transfer funds by the deadline[3]

If you get an Overdraft Grace Opportunity Notice, deposit cash at a Regions banking office or Regions ATM or transfer funds from another Regions account in online banking by the Overdraft Grace period deadline.

Overdraft Grace details

  • Regions Overdraft Grace gives you an opportunity to avoid Paid Overdraft Item Fees if you overdraw your account. When one business day’s transactions overdraw your account’s available balance by more than $5, you’ll have until 8 p.m. Central Time the next business day to add funds to the account. As long as your checking account’s available balance is positive or isn’t overdrawn by more than $5 after nightly processing for that next business day, we won’t charge you an overdraft fee.

Note that if the day of your overdraft notice is a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday, you will have until 8:00 p.m. Central Time the next business day after your overdraft to meet the deposit or transfer deadline.

    Example:

    • Business day 1 - You make a purchase that overdraws the account by $25. (We do not charge an overdraft fee when the available balance on a personal checking account is overdrawn by $5 or less.)
    • Business day 2 - Assuming no other transactions post to the account, including any pending transactions (like debit card transactions) during that night, your account balance will be overdrawn by $25.
      • You'll have until 8 p.m. Central Time to make a deposit of at least $20 to avoid overdraft fees.
      • To help ensure that funds will be available to cover your overdraft, you may want to consider depositing cash at a Regions branch (before branch closing time) or Regions ATM or using Regions Online Banking to transfer funds from another Regions account. Any deposit or credit to the account is eligible to increase the available balance, but not all deposits are guaranteed to qualify you for Overdraft Grace. For example, a check deposit may be subject to a funds availability hold.
    • Business day 3 - If a deposit is posted in time, and your available balance is equal to or greater than -$5, the overdraft fee will not be assessed. However, if a sufficient deposit was not made, or other transactions cause the balance to be lower than -$5, an overdraft fee will be applied to the account.
  • All Regions consumer and Private Wealth Management personal checking accounts (with the exception of Now Checking and SafeGuard Checking) are eligible for Regions Overdraft Grace.
  • While there's no enrollment required for Overdraft Grace, customers who enroll in Regions Online Banking or use the Regions mobile app3 and sign up for Negative Balance or Overdraft alerts1 will likely receive notices of overdrafts sooner.

If your account is overdrawn, we'll notify you in one or more of the following ways:

    • If you are a primary account owner and have a current, valid email address associated with your account, you'll receive an email.
    • If you're enrolled in Online Banking or use the mobile banking app, when you log in to review your account, you'll see an Overdraft Alert message in your account overview.
    • If you're enrolled in Online Banking and you've enrolled in Negative Balance or Overdraft alerts, you'll receive a notification by whichever method you've chosen (push, SMS/text[4]) or email.
    • If you're enrolled in Online Statements, you can review the Regions Overdraft Grace Opportunity Notice for the account in the Statements menu in both Online Banking and the Regions mobile app.
  • When a transaction, withdrawal or other item posts to your account and you don’t have enough money in your account to pay the item, the bank may either:

    • Pay the item into overdraft[5], depending on whether you've chosen one of Regions overdraft services.
    • Review the item for NSF ("non-sufficient funds") and choose to either pay it into overdraft or return it unpaid. Please note that making an Overdraft Grace deposit or transfer will not prevent an NSF Review item from being returned unpaid.
  • When one business day’s transactions overdraw your account’s available balance by more than $5, you’ll have until 8 p.m. Central Time the next business day to add funds to the account. As long as your checking account’s available balance is positive or isn’t overdrawn by more than $5 after nightly processing for that next business day, we won’t charge you an overdraft fee.

NSF Review transactions are pending overdraft transactions that may be paid or returned after review. Please note that making an Overdraft Grace deposit or transfer will not prevent an NSF Review item from being returned unpaid.

  • The Overdraft alert message will remain on your Online Banking account overview throughout the day that your account is in Overdraft Grace, even if deposits and transfers were made and the available balance is positive. This is to remind you that the account must have a positive available balance, or be overdrawn by no more than $5 after nightly processing to avoid the overdraft fee.

  • For greater peace of mind, you can link your Regions personal checking account to a Regions overdraft protection product. When you enroll in Regions Overdraft Protection ("ODP"), your checking account is linked to a designated funding account at Regions, such as another deposit account (including a savings or money market account), credit card account, or a line of credit. ODP may be used to authorize and/or to pay debit card and ATM transactions if your checking account lacks sufficient available funds. Regions Overdraft Protection may be used to pay checks, ACH transactions, and other items when payment of those items would overdraw the checking account.
  • Deposits from money transfer services (like Zelle®, Cash App, Venmo, etc.) are eligible to cover an overdraft. However, it’s important to be aware that deposits made using money transfer services may sometimes be delayed (e.g., due to holds or funds availability policies, transfer service processing times, etc.). Deposits must be reflected in your account’s available balance by 8:00 p.m. Central time on the next business day after an overdraft in order to qualify for Regions Overdraft Grace.
